Considering Life

I have been thinking about life more and more as of late and reminding myself of how great we really have it. When I wake up in the morning I am in a nice warm house with walls, a comfortable bed, blankets, a pillow, and an alarm clock to wake me up (that part isn’t so nice). July 4th marked the 70th anniversary of Lou Gehrig’s famous speech in which he “Considers himself the luckiest man on the face of the earth.”

There is so much to gain by having an attitude like Gehrig’s. The Torah teaches the Jewish people to not covet the goods of thy neighbor and that is exactly what Gehrig’ story teaches us. He was put in an unfair situation, but he made the best of it and people today remember him for his strength. The same can be said about former NC State Basketball Coach Jim Valvano. Before Valvano’s death from bone cancer, Coach Valvano spoke at the ESPY Awards

To me, there are three things we all should do every day. We should do this every day of our lives. Number one is laugh. You should laugh every day. Number two is think. You should spend some time in thought. And Number three is, you should have your emotions moved to tears, could be happiness or joy. But think about it. If you laugh, you think, and you cry, that’s a full day. That’s a heck of a day. You do that seven days a week, you’re going to have something special.

I guess what I am trying to say from this entry which seems to have more quotes and video than actual entry is that life is a precious gift. Rarely will you see or here me speak of it this way, but it is a gift that g-d gives us and that we grasp at. G-d gives us the strength to live and the passion to make things right, to fight what is evil, and to help our brothers and sisters of mother earth. We are so lucky to wake up in the morning and take and smell the morning air, smile, and even more minor things. These are things we must all consider. Life has it’s ups and downs, it’s “curveballs” is you will, but the strongest people are the ones who can hang around all the way through Round 10 despite falling down early. It is those who get up back on the horse that are the strongest.
