My Love for the City

Now for those of you who don’t know me well, I grew up in a small town in New Jersey that was a rural suburb of New York City.  My love for New York City was one I can’t begin to describe.  My memories of the city are ones that will never leave me.  I found my love for another city last year during my freshman year at CofC.  The summer has really made me miss it.  I missed it more than anything today when I was listening to one of my favorite comedians, Steven Wright, because he said,

Everywhere is walking distance if you have the time.

Now as funny as it was to hear, it reminded me how much I miss Charleston.  There is something about city life to me that I can really describe well.  I guess part of it is the fact that in Downtown I NEVER need a car.  Anytime I want to get anywhere in East Cobb I have to jump in the car, drive a couple miles, possibly pick up other people, get there and drive back.  In Charleston things are so much simpler with the sidewalks as our roads and our carpool lanes.  I guess what I am saying is that suburban sprawl is getting to me.  I look at the streets of East Cobb and wonder who zoned this place.  The zoning wastes so much space, but I guess that is the way the mothers and fathers that raise their children in suburbia want it.  A place where things are not close together or convenient, but a place that is “comfortable”.  I wish things were real walking distance, because I don’t have the time nor energy to walk to work.  I guess maybe I’m a city boy.
